After 8 months of surgeries and therapy, he was able to return home, no longer dependent upon a ventilator and slightly moving his arms. Three years later he decided to change his profession to social work. He went back to college and with honors, earned a degree in social work from Indiana University. He now works full-time as the Program Director for accessABILITY Center for Independent Living which empowers people with disabilities to achieve their independence. Marc drives an accessible vehicle and lives independently. With the assistance of SCI Hope, Marc had the broken windows replaced in his home. He no longer must feel inclement weather inside his home. Because of SCI Hope, Marc can maintain good health and continue being active in the community without the threat of illnesses risking his health in his home. Marc is beyond appreciative for the assistance and highly recommends, as well as refers, people to SCI Hope!!

Marcus – Grant Recipient – August 2011 |
When Marcus’ grandson was born, Marcus retired so that he could be his full-time day care giver. For 4 ½ years, Marcus’ goal was to provide positive, educational experiences for him. As you can see in the picture, they enjoyed activities. They went to playgrounds, horseback riding, swimming, bike riding and hiking. Marcus suffered a T12 spinal cord injury in May 2011 in a tree trimming accident and those activities came to a screeching halt. An SCI Hope grant was awarded to Marcus for the purchase of a personal transporter and wheelchair converter kit which will allow Marcus to get back on the trails and other terrain with his grandson! |

"Thank you so much for your help! Your grant not only assisted me in receiving my new chair but helped build me as an individual. I would not have improved tremendously as an individual on, as well as off the court. I have become better in both worlds thanks to your generosity. I have greatly helped my team as a player and built up my confidence in myself more. Opportunities, possibilities and achievements in life-long goals have become within my grasps within just a few months. Without your help, I would not be this close to my hopes and dreams." |

David - Grant recipient - July 2010 |
David Franklin Smith, Jr., a 19-year old student at University of Indianapolis found himself paralyzed after a dive into a pool on March 24, 2010. After surgery and months of rehab, David was able to walk with a cane, then a walker, then with no assistance at all! David says, “Being in the hospital and not working all summer, I had no money to pay the balance for my tuition for the semester. SCI Hope helped keep my dreams going on, helped me keep a normal life going even when it was not so normal. I deeply appreciate everything that SCI Hope has done for me and along with other stories in which SCI has helped others. Without SCI Hope I wouldn't have been able to go back to college. I would personally thank everyone that is a part and helps with the fund.”
